Get To Know: The Various Applications of Electrical Wire Connectors

As the name suggests, electrical wire connectors are primarily used to connect electrical circuits as an interface in which engineers use mechanical assemblies. These connectors consist of jacks which further comprise a female end that plugs into a male end. Wire connectors play a very important role due to the fact that they are not only used for permanent but are also used for temporary solutions, which also includes the use of an adaptor so that they can bring dissimilar connectors together.

Electrical connectors are available in various types, and hence have unique roles to play. However, before we delve into the various types of applications of these electrical connectors, we need to understand what makes them different from cable connectors- cable connectors are used to connect devices with wires, electrical wire connectors are used to connect electrically.

The Various Uses of Electrical Wire Connectors:

Electrical Wire Connectors are most frequently used in:

  1. 8P8C

‘Eight positions/ eight conductors’ (8P8C)- these are modular electrical connectors that come in eight positions containing all the conductors. These find applications in various uses, however, they are mostly recognized in CAT5 and Ethernet Cables. Although they mostly look like the RJ45 cables that are used for landline telephones, the socket on the side which the connector fits is different.

  1. D-Subminiature

This is yet another type of electrical wire connectors these are mostly found on IBM compatible computers and even in some modem ports. These are primarily used for testing, computers, and telecommunications, these also come in variants along with solid machined contacts, crimp, and PCB mounts, thermocouple contact options, and etc.

  1. USB

Universal Serial Bus (USB), these connectors find standard use in interface devices. These are available in different types and each type serves different purposes. However, these are most frequently used in the manufacturing of PCs.

  1. Power

Power electrical wire connectors, also commonly known as AC Power Plugs/ Sockets and DC connectors, are also available in various types. The main function of these types of electrical connectors is that they prevent people from facing accidents like being shocked if they come in contact with energized electrical conductors. Included with these power connectors are safety ground connections and power conductors. Power connectors also comprise multiphase power plugs/ sockets, including NEMA connectors.

  1. Radio Frequency

Yet another common type of electrical conductor is the radio frequency or RF connector. As the name suggests, these are primarily used for radio frequencies and are essential for connectors that do not alternate with the transmission line’s impedance.
